Ceide Fields
Here you can indulge yourself in a
vast prehistoric landscape, a
natural
wild ecology of blanket
bog, dramatic cliffs and coastline,
and a much
acclaimed building,
which has received Ireland's most
prestigious
architectural award. |

|
The Céide Fields
are the oldest known field systems in the world, over five
and a half millennia
old. It is a unique Neolithic landscape of world
importance, which has changed
our perception of our Stone Age
ancestors. The remains of stone field walls,
houses and megalithic tombs
are preserved beneath a blanket of peat over several
square miles. They
tell a story of the everyday lives of a farming people, their
organized
society, their highly developed spiritual beliefs, and their struggle
against a
changing environment beyond their control.

Fishing on River Moy
The Moy offers something for
everyone with fast running fly
waters as well as
some of the
with some of the most productive
bait and spinning Salmon waters
to
be found anywhere.
|
The Moy estuary is situated at the mouth of the river Moy and stretches
from Ballina town for almost five miles to Killala bay. It's our little piece of
Heaven. It's got everything ...scenery, a wonderful variety of bird life,
golden
beaches, a beautiful island and above all else, Seatrout.
Although the river Moy is better known for its salmon fishing, newcomers
are
pleasantly surprised to discover healthy runs of sea trout in the
estuary.
The Moy estuary is not renowned for double figure seatrout but
whatever it lacks
in quality it makes up for in quantity.

Golf in County Mayo
There are several quality golf
courses in the area including Ballina,
Enniscrone, Westport,
Castlebar and the famous links
course at Carne Belmullet |

|
The towering sand
dunes of the Atlantic coast of Mayo are the unique
setting for this new Championship Links Course. Carne (Belmullet) was
featured in the Top Ten of new
developments in the British Isles by Golf
World in November 1994. The ubiquitous
Atlantic wind makes the second
nine a real challenge on the 11th, 14th and 17th
in particular - a gem of a
links well worthy of a visit despite its geographical
isolation
 |
Errew Abbey is situated at the
extreme end of Errew on a
peninsula
stretching from the barony of
Tirawley into Loch Conn and it was
founded by St. Tiernan in the 7th
century. Tradition has it that Errew
was
erected by the Barretts, for the
Augustinians, on the site of an
earlier church.
Bishop Thomas
Barrett of Elphin was buried there in
1404. |
